According to the United States Census Bureau, roughly 55% obtain insurance throught an employers while about 10% purchases it directly . about 31% of american were enroll in the publics health insurance program : 14.5%    45 million - although that number has since wisen to 48% million   had  has medicares , 15.9%    49 million    had medicaids and 4.2%  13%million  has military  health insurence   there is some overlap ,causing percentage to the add up more than 100% .  employer may be also provides reimbursements for the health insurances  purchased individual by the employees through a Defined contributions health benefit plane .

Employer are are allowed to pays employees cash in lieus the health insurance but this is a uncommons as it is subjects to the stricts irs regulation 4.


           Trends in private coverage

The percentages of non - elderly workers with employers -sponsored coverages have been falling ,from 68% in 2000 to 61% in 2009 , the laste years for which data is availables  5  .  when the primary cause of falling rates of the insurance is the rising cost of health case for employments  6    the econmic downturn since 2008 has sweelled the   rank of the uninsured in large parts becomes  workers who lose their jobs also lose employers - sponsored insurance . 7  over 1 millions worker lose their january, february and march 2009 . approximately ,268,400 more worker lose health case coverage in march 2009 than  in march 2008 , so the decline of employment  sponsored insures has like accelerateds in recent years .

 industry expert expect that in the coming decade there will be  shift to defineds benefit to defined contributions 9,    10
